Your fridge has stopped cooling and the technician has quoted a repair. Is it worth paying, or should you sell it and buy another? Here is a straight way to decide.

The one number that settles it

The rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half what the fridge is worth working, sell it. A ₹4,000 compressor replacement on an 8 year old single door worth ₹2,000 makes no sense. The same repair on a 3 year old side by side worth ₹7,200 usually does.

Which repairs are worth it

Worth paying for. Thermostat faults, door seal replacement, fan motor, defrost timer, gas top up. These are a few hundred to about two thousand rupees and typically buy years of use.

Think hard. Compressor replacement. This is the expensive one, usually several thousand, and on an older fridge it often precedes other failures.

Rarely worth it. A rusted through cabinet base, a cracked inner liner, or a unit that has already had a compressor replaced once. At that point you are maintaining a machine that owes you nothing.

Age changes the maths

Refrigerators from the last five years are meaningfully more efficient than what came before. If yours is over ten years old, the running cost difference alone can pay for a good part of a replacement over a few years.

That does not mean scrap it the moment it turns ten. It means an expensive repair on a very old unit is money spent to keep an inefficient machine alive.

If you decide to sell

A working fridge is worth several times a dead one. This surprises people, and it is the reason it is worth selling before it fails completely rather than after.

A dead fridge is priced on recoverable material: the compressor, the copper in the cooling circuit, the aluminium and the steel cabinet. A working one is priced on what it resells for. The gap is usually four to six times.

So if it still cools at all, even weakly, quote it as a used fridge. Partial cooling is a repairable fault, not a dead machine. If it has genuinely stopped, scrap pricing still beats paying somebody to remove it.

Things that affect what you are offered

Size. A side by side is worth several times a small single door, both working and as scrap.
Cooling performance. The main question we ask.
Cosmetic condition. Dents and rust reduce it, though less than people expect.
Missing shelves or a broken door bin. Small deductions, not disqualifying.
The original bill. Adds a small premium.

The practical bit nobody mentions

Fridges are heavy and usually not on the ground floor. That is the real obstacle to selling one, and it is where classified listings tend to fall apart. Buyers found online frequently renegotiate once they see the stairs.

We quote before travelling, bring enough people to carry it, and hold the quoted price if the fridge matches the description. Carrying it down is included, from any floor, lift or no lift.

Common questions

Will you buy a fridge that does not cool at all? Yes. The price reflects it, but it is still worth more than free removal.

Do I need to defrost it first? It helps us move it safely and is appreciated, but it does not change your price.
